Who Is Sonia
Sonia's passion for cooking stems directly from her grandmother, a gifted West Indian Chef. She taught Sonia her techniques and ingredients through her childhood and teen years, leaving her a legacy of good home cooked meals.
Her ethnicity is West Indian American and Nigerian, but Sonia really is a citizen of the world. Having attended schools in Europe, America and Nigeria and enjoyed extensive travel, she developed an understanding and taste for the diversity in food culture and its importance in forming global connections.
Sonia has taught culinary art privately in Ghana, Nigeria, Swaziland and Ghana, also hosting a cooking segment on the TV3 Ghana's Today's Woman, a lifestyle magazine television production in which she taught and presented healthy food options for adults and children.
She has been published in The Weekend Mirror the Ghanaian National Newspaper, contributing articles for their Health Line column, she wrote editorials concerning health and food for Ghanaian and International visitors.
In Nigeria, she is best known for her Television Programme FOOD JOURNEY which was featured for 6 years on the DSTV Africa platform as well as Channels 24/ Sky across the U.K. as well as streaming services. As producer and host, Sonia was involved at every level of the production and the hard work paid off with a nomination for an African Media Merit Award for best Television Documentary programme 2022.
Like her grandmother, Sonia is passionate about sharing her love of cooking to the next generation and has taught creative and culinary arts to Nursery School through High School, in five countries around the globe.
Sonia has relocated back to New York and is very eager to become part of a team where she can share her rich experience with children and adults who are eager to hear a unique story surrounding food, and offer a diverse experience in culinary education from farm to plate.

Her award nominated International Culinary TV show Food Journey takes you on a journey through West African cuisine thru the ages. Chef Sonia Akpata Usmar offers West African home cooking workshops for individuals or groups of 1-4 guests. These are informal cooking demonstrations with practical tutorial, question and answer session and, of course, eatl, while learning about the role of food in West African culture.
